Bethany-Kids.jpgEast African surgical care is often unaffordable.  Many parents opt out of relatively simple surgeries and children grow up disfigured, teased or unnecessarily sick.

Equipped with a team of specialized nurses, doctors and other health care professionals, the Bethany Kids unit within Kijabe Hospital (Kenya) provides pediatric surgical care that strives to be the best in Sick and recovering children are shown the love of God, and are introduced to the Great Physician East Africa.  The unit trains other healthcare professionals in the surgical rehabilitation of children, and trains parents in methods of care that will enable their children to lead a more normal life.  BethanyKids also operates mobile clinics at 14 sites across the country, including several refugee camps near the borders of Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan.

Pediatric Surgery/Plastic Surgery:

Over the years, a growing number of disabled children have come to Kijabe Hospital for care. Many come with hydrocephalus and spina bifida, others as burn victims. In 2004, BethanyKids at Kijabe Hospital began providing the special care required for these problems, and in 2009 the unit performed over 2500 surgeries. Since most mothers arrive with little or no money, medical care is heavily subsidized.  We have generous support from individuals, churches, and a few foundations, but as the ministry expands, so does the need for added support. For more information please refer to the BethanyKids website.

Pediatric Surgery Residency:

In 2007 Bethany Kids at Kijabe Hospital was approved by the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA) as a training center for pediatric surgeons. Dr. Heuric Rakotomalala, our first trainee, is a Malagasy surgeon with a passion for pediatric surgery and a vision of starting a BethanyKids centre in his home-country of Madagascar. Dr. Frehun Ayele, an Ethiopian surgeon, joined the BethanyKids fellowship training program in mid-2009. His vision is remarkably similar to Heuric’s: to become an excellent pediatric surgeon and open a BethanyKids center in Ethiopia. His country has over 70 million people and less than a handful of pediatric surgeons.  In the next five years, BethanyKids would like to train 10 pediatric surgeons from five different countries, with the vision of establishing BethanyKids centres across the continent. You can help sponsor the fellowship training program through AIM.
