The following statement was issued by a spokesman from Aim's Nairobi-based Crisis Management Team (CMT).
The events in Kenya yesterday were on a smaller scale than the last few days. That is good news. Nairobi and other major towns around the country seemed to carry out business on a fairly normal basis. The events in Kenya yesterday were on a smaller scale than the last few days. That is good news. Nairobi and other major towns around the country seemed to carry out business on a fairly normal basis. There was new violence in the outskirts of Nairobi in a place called Kikuyu. But the police did a good job of keeping it from getting totally out of control. However there are many people in that area who have fled from their homes due to threats based on their ethnicity. There are still scattered pockets of violence and unrest in the Rift Valley Province. Naivasha and Nakuru towns are slowly simmering down, but still tense with many having fled the area or taking refuge at government centers. Kibera slum in Nairobi had running battles all day between rival gangs divided along tribal lines. But the police were able to keep that contained. The roadblocks in Western and Rift Valley were fewer today and traffic was slowly starting to move again. The government made public statements promising people that security on the roads would be beefed up to allow safe passage throughout the country. Another statement was made by the government warning the hooligan gangs that the police will act decisively to stop their activities, but in accordance with the law. The general feeling today was that the government seemed more active and committed to reigning in the violence that had been starting to spread out of control in some locations. All of our missionaries are safe. But we still need your prayers. And Kenya's people need your prayers. They are tired, confused and in dire need of God's healing touch. |
