Since its inception in 1989 the Instituto Biblio de Sofala (Sofala Bible institute), in Beira, the principal city of the Sofala province in central Mozambique, has trained over 100 pastors and church leaders for the churches in the region. The Institute has long held the goal of offering degree-level courses. Under its new director and with the development of new facilities, this goal is being realised.

A new era dawned for Sofala Bible Institute on 1 March when Pastor Alberto Mucanze became Director. For many years the school has prayed for a Mozambican director. Before coming to Sofala Bible Institute, Pastor Mucanze served as a church planter in Maputo (the capital of Mozambique), earned a Masters in Missions in Brazil and taught in a Brazilian Bible school. He returned to Mozambique in November, 2007 with a passion to prepare students to plant churches. He is particularly keen to see outreach by Mozambicans to people groups in Mozambique without the gospel. Pastor Mucanze and his wife Felizarda (pictured)have three children, two of whom are in Brazil studying. Their youngest daughter is with them in Beira.
There are a number of huge challenges. The school is seeking accreditation with plans to offer a BA Degree in Theology starting in 2009.

The degree programme will be housed in a new building. The Lord has provided over half of the £425,000 needed to complete the construction of the new Theological Education Resource Centre and work on phase one has already started. Aim’s UK Board have made a grant to this project. Gifts may be given through Aim for the “Sofala Bible Institute Construction” project.
