Graduates, graduating from Institut Supérieur Pédagogique in July 2006. For many decades, CECA-20 (Aim’s partner church in DR Congo) has had the freedom to run kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. While these operate within the bounds of the Congolese government’s statutes and curriculum, the Church has control of the appointment of teachers, the governing bodies and the religious education programme of these schools.
In July last year, Kwenzama graduated as an English teacher. But more significant for Kwenzama is that, due to the active Christian teaching, students from different tribes could study together in the post-conflict years. Today Kwenzama has friends from many different tribes and is unafraid to stay in their homes. This is a very practical expression of spiritual growth that was nurtured by the staff, through Bible studies and at the spiritual retreats. The people of Lodeng’o have heard the gospel in the past but now that there are missionaries living among them, visiting them and teaching them, people are coming to Christ. To meet the growing need for teachers, CECA-20’s Education Department took the initiative to found its own teacher training college in order to prepare Christian teachers for its secondary schools. The English Language and Literature Department of the Institut Supérieur Pédagogique has been functioning in Bunia since 1993. (With the presence of the United Nations personnel in urban centres, access to the Internet and the availability of mobile phones, English is a cutting-edge language for Congo’s youth.) The Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences was created two years later and is based at Rethy. The Ministry of Education has recently given permission to open a Department of Management and Business Studies. The English Language and Literature Department is insufficiently housed in a rented property in the noisy back streets of Bunia. There is only classroom space for two of the three years to study at one time, and the opening of the much-needed Department of Management and Business Studies has been postponed due to the lack of facilities. FOR PRAYER
We're very thankful for a very generous gift towards the construction of college premises on a site owned by CECA-20. We're also asking God to give us clarity in planning the buildings, balancing the available finances and the necessary functions. Too many buildings in town haven't risen above foundation level. We need an expert to guide in the drawing up of plans and the estimation of building supplies. We need a project manager, an overseer and a team of builders. We need wisdom in handling the squatters on a corner of the land. We need creative ideas for the long term development of such a prime site.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Lord accompanied some of the visitors (angels?) whom we've entertained in Bunia and he said: I am the LORD! There is nothing too difficult for me. I'll come back next year at the time I promised, and you'll have your school buildings" (Gen 18:14)!
Thank you for praying with us as we seek the Lord for these great needs. "O our God ... We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you." 2 Chron 20:12
