Sudan Partnership Project

Hope for Sudan as the sun rises over Juba

The country of Sudan is emerging from decades of conflict. The church, which has seen real growth during the dark years of war, is keen to embrace the new opportunities presented by the peace. But this church, many of whose members the war has driven far from their homes, faces a very real shortage of resources. Aim International has stood with its partner church, Africa Inland Church-Sudan (AIC-Sudan), through the years of war and now is pledged to develop a new partnership with them in the light of the peace. What the church may lack in resources it makes up for in vision, enthusiasm and commitment.

There is an undeniable sense of optimism in Sudan. Many church leaders with whom Aim's European Director John Brand met on his visit to Sudan earlier this year, spoke of the changes that they had witnessed since the January 2005 signing of the peace agreement that brought to an end the twenty-year civil war between the Islamic North and Christian/animist South. One pastor says, “This peace is not just a peace where people sign papers. The war brought trauma to different communities ... and a lot of people are feeling wounded. They need the peace of God. And this is what we feel as a church, that we need to take the peace of God to every area in Sudan.”

Sudan: a new dawn DVD

We have recently produced a DVD in which Aim’s European Director, John Brand, introduces the Sudan Partnership Project.

Despite years of persecution the church has reason to hope. “The church has been bulldozed, but the church is growing and sometimes we are surprised” says Africa Inland Church-Sudan (AIC‑S) Pastor James Alexander Lagos who is based in Khartoum. “We have no tools to carry the gospel, we have no finances, but the church is growing and at the end of the day we know there is somebody behind us who is praying and these are the prayers of our brothers and sisters in the west, and all over the world.”

The hope that the peace has brought comes at a price. Aim is lanching the Sudan Partnership Project in order to raise both financial and prayer support for the church in Sudan.

The Project is set up to assist the church in four areas: training, outreach, income-generation and schools. In the articles linked to below Aim’s European Director, John Brand, who was in Sudan earlier this year gives some background as to how the funds raised by the project will enable the church to serve the people of Sudan more effectively.
