When Sudan’s referendum results came back with 99% of voters giving a very clear message: ‘We want independence’, there were scenes of joy and celebrations in the streets. And so, South Sudan is set to become the world's newest independent state on 9 July.

Yet, with this new beginning there are new challenges, as the South Sudan government, SPLM, looks to the future, developing the country’s infrastructure and economy, as well as its taut relationship with North Sudan. Since the referendum results there have been a number of conflicts over border disputes, which have resulted in deaths.

And yet, amongst all of these physical changes there are the spiritual challenges as well, with AIM’s mission partners, notably Nicola Limburger, taking community health care in Rumbek, and Russ & Lyn Noble, teaching literacy in Torit, living out their lives for God in the middle of so much turmoil and uncertainty. However, no matter what the circumstances and level of spiritual opposition, God’s kingdom is prevailing (Matthew 16:18).
In addition, please remember the believers and Africa Inland Church in North Sudan, whose lives have been threatened and face possible persecution under stronger Islamic rule. Give praise though that, despite this, as Reverend James Lagos told AIM, the Sudanese Church has ‘no fear’ of opposition and is happy to spread the gospel.

Please pray especially for Sudan this month and remember our members having to deal first-hand with the repercussions of change.
