I’m not talking about its monetary value – whether or not it cost you a small fortune to buy – but the very fact that you have Scripture in your hands. How thankful are you and I that we can read from God’s Word in our own language, come to know Him better as a result of that reading and pray in response to it? It’s very easy for us to become somewhat complacent at having so many different English Bible translations to choose from, and, if you’re like me, you probably already have a number of different versions in your home. Yet, our abundance is as far on the other side of the spectrum as it can be when compared to situations in Africa, where many cultures do not have any Scripture – not even a Gospel – in their native language. I was struck recently by a newsletter from Tim and Beth Wood, in Beira, Mozambique; thankfully translation work has been going well there. Here’s what they wrote: “A Christian really ought to have a Bible.” Ndakawa, a widow with several children, hadn’t had a Bible for several years, ever since her old one was wrecked by water. When Beth showed her a copy of the revised Cindau Bible (published last year), Ndakawa took out almost half of the money she had just received from a relative in Beira and bought one, becoming the first person in Machanga to buy the revised Cindau Bible. “Mahwinga is a subsistence farmer and pastor of a small church. His only cash income comes from selling the grass used to roof houses. He really wanted to buy the new Bible but wouldn’t have £3.50 until he could sell the grass he’d cut. When Beth offered to take a five-gallon bucket of sorghum instead, Pastor Mahwinga was so happy to be able to buy a Bible.” I ask myself, as I ask you, if all of your Bibles were taken away from you tomorrow, how much would you be willing to give just to get one?
