Borana

BORAN of KENYA

Population: 38,000
Location: Eastern half of Marsabit District, Isiolo District. Most within a 100 mile wide strip south of the Ethopian border.

The Boran are the largest Galla speaking people group in Kenya. They practice Folk Islam but many practice "Ayana" a very powerful and much feared form of Satan worship. The Boran are a basically nomadic people because the area where they live has little rainfall and little water sources for their cattle and camels. However, increasing population, overgrazing and repeated droughts have forced many to depend on relief programs which moves them into more structured settlements.

There are two Boran churches with Boran members. Recently 12 were baptized and the church has appointed five elders. In towns, Islam is on the increase but in the rural areas most follow traditional religion.

112e année en Afrique
Prier
