The Niellim People of Chad February 2008
On 2 February rebels launched a major assault on Chad's capital, N'Djamena, briefly seizing control of large parts of the city before being pushed back by government troops. The Rebel groups who laid siege to the capital have since fled east. But the fighting that occurred in the city has resulted in many lost lives as well as evoking fear. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said that of the more than 30,000 refugees thought to have fled across the Chari river into neighbouring Cameroon, many have already returned, though the agency could not claim to know how many remained. The French government provided security for expatriates in the capital city, with daily evacuation flights (photo above). Most of AIM’s personnel have been evacuated and await further instruction of return. Please pray for returned security and stability in the country so that the crucial Gospel work can carry on in this needy country. Pray for wisdom for mission leadership as they assess the situation and make decisions about AIM’s future work in Chad. Pray for the many Chadian families who have lost loved ones or have been displaced due to the crisis. Pray for the Evangelical Church of Chad and its president Batein Kaligue, as he and his team encourage members and seek to reach out to those in need with the love and peace of Christ. |
