Bunia, DRC - According to missionary Rosemary Walker who has recently returned to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the war ravaged town of Bunia is returning to normal. She said, “Schools and businesses are carrying on nicely. The presence of the UN peacekeepers and a few None Government Organizations (NGOs) give some people opportunity for work. UN personnel, Congolese soldiers, Doctors Without Borders, and others roll around town in their vans and jeeps, and others hop a motorcycle taxi to get around.” Walker noted that “there is more traffic in town than ever before, and even some homes are being repaired or built, a sure sign that some people have money.” Noting the tragedy of war she observed that even though “...war has brought death and trouble to all, but now with the UN here and a measure of security, we are benefitting from the peace-keeping operation." |
