Kuito, Angola is a poor city, without running water, electricity or sanitation. The shells of the gunshot buildings stand as reminders of one of the cruelest and most violent wars in Africa. Few shattered buildings have been repaired or reconstructed, but they are still home to many of the residents. They simply do not have the resources to re-build at this time. Operation Kuito is a project that will help start a new phase of hope and renewal in Kuito.
After witnessing the state of the people in Kuito, a vision was born to build a youth center that would help meet the needs of many of the cities young people. The youth center will include a gymnasium, a children's library, and a youth clinic for HIV/AIDS testing and education.
To the average young person in Kuito, “church” has become an outdated and no-longer-necessary idea. "It’s as if they have fallen into a giant black hole, and no one has bothered to shine the light for them to climb out," says Kristy Rasenen, who first initiated the project. Building this youth center in Kuito will finally give local church leaders a place with the resources to reach the youth and introduce them to the light and life of Jesus Christ.

When AIM's Angola team first arrived in Kuito, they had a meeting with leaders in the community to discuss urgent needs and how they could help. The team was distressed at the lack of effort, resources, and programs available to meet critical needs, especially among Kuito's 80,000 youth.
