The need for theological training in Africa is great. And the Uganda Bible Institute is only a small school with 66 students. Yet God is using it to make a dramatic impact on the church.
Most of the pastors attending UBI are
responsible for between three and six
churches, touching thousands of lives. Forty-one new students enrolled in the in-service program this past April. According to Don and Fran McNeill, missionaries to Uganda, these students will spend two weeks of training at UBI before returning to their home churches for two weeks. Then they will come back to school for two weeks. Then back home again. This rotating schedule will continue for two to three years, enabling them to train and still be involved in their home churches. By the end of August, UBI expects to have l00 students enrolled in two programs with three classes running simultaneously. "Humble beginnings, perhaps," the McNeills write, "but remember that almost all of these students will be recruited by the Church of Uganda to pastor three to six churches each. Literally thousands of Ugandans will be affected by the ministry of these l00 students, in addition to the 22 students who have already graduated." The Uganda Bible Institute may be modest in size - only a ripple on the ocean - but God is doing big things through it. "With God’s help," the McNeills write, "that ripple can become a wave sweeping over the church with the knowledge of His grace and love learned through His Word." The McNeills ask for prayer for UBI, the students, teachers, and their own role in training pastors for the work of the church. |
